Hospitals Must Use Renewed Medicare Notices Beginning Aug. 28

Posted on July 06, 2017

The Office of Management and Budget for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved renewed notices that hospitals must use for Medicare beneficiaries who are admitted to their facilities. All hospitals, including critical access hospitals, must provide the renewed Important Message from Medicare (IM) and Detailed Notice of Discharge (DND) for both Medicare fee-for-service and Medicare Advantage patients beginning Aug. 28.

The IM (CMS-R-193) informs Medicare patients about their rights as a hospital inpatient and provides information for requesting a case review by the Quality Improvement Organization. The DND (Form CMS-10066) provides Medicare patients with an explanation regarding the end of Medicare inpatient services on a specific date, in agreement with the patient’s physician based on Medicare coverage policies and the patient’s medical condition. Questions regarding the IM and DND should be emailed to the CMS. For additional information, contact Vickie Kunz at the MHA.
