News to Know – Week of July 13

Posted on July 11, 2020

Important healthcare news for the week of July 13:

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has launched an online portal where community organizations can request free naloxone, a medication that reverses opioid overdoses and saves lives. The portal is available to any community organization statewide, including substance use treatment providers, nonprofits, harm-reduction organizations, jails, first responders, local governments and small businesses. The MDHHS will review organizations’ plans for distributing naloxone to individuals at high risk of overdose. If approved, kits will be mailed in increments of 12 to the organization, which is expected to have a plan for distribution and training for individuals at risk of overdose on how to use naloxone. Separately, NEXT Naloxone, a free, online service, has partnered with the MDHHS to offer individuals free naloxone delivered by mail. More information is available at Michigan.gov/Opioids.

  • The Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL) within the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs has delayed Phase 3 of the transition to the online licensing and regulatory database for health and occupational professionals, called the Michigan Professional Licensing User System (MiPLUS). Phase 3 has been delayed from July 28 to Aug. 25 due to the need for remote testing and state employee furlough days caused by COVID-19. The state has provided a revised Frequently Asked Questions document, which includes a list of the 12 affected professions. To allow time for migration of current licensing records into the new system, the BPL will be unable to process license applications, license renewals or changes to licenses for these 12 professions between Aug. 3 and Aug. 25. Members with questions can contact the BPL at (517) 241-0199 or Paige Fults at the MHA.
