Interlochen Public Radio Focuses on Healthcare Challenges Facing Rural Michigan

Interlochen Public Radio published a story March 2 that reviews the healthcare challenges facing rural Michigan.

The article focuses on access to healthcare in rural Michigan as the largest obstacle for patients. In addition, the high percentage of Michigan's rural population on Medicaid is mentioned as a challenge.

Laura Appel, senior vice president and chief innovation officer, MHA, is quoted on Medicaid reimbursement rates and the importance of the Healthy Michigan Plan.

“The people who serve our patients, the nurses and other attendants who are in our hospital and do amazing work,” said Appel. “If you are paying less than the cost of delivering those services, how do you keep up with the salary and benefits those who are delivering patient care deserve?”
