MHA Makes Lead Gift to Michigan Harvest Gathering
Posted on October 03, 2018
On behalf of the MHA and its member hospitals, a $30,000 lead gift was made to the Michigan Harvest Gathering (MHG) Oct. 2 as part of the MHG campaign kickoff media conference at Cristo Rey Community Center, Lansing.
Entering its 28th year, the MHG is a statewide effort to collect food and fund for the Food Bank Council of Michigan (FBCM) and its member food banks across Michigan. The campaign was originally started by Attorney General Bill Schutte and his wife, Cynthia, in 1991. During the campaign’s 27 years, more than $10 million and 10 million pounds of food have been raised. The MHA’s gift represents the first of many contributions from the healthcare community during the two-month 2018 campaign.
Representing the MHA, Nancy McKeague, senior vice president and chief of staff, joined Michigan Harvest Gathering partners including:
- Attorney General Bill Schuette
- Secretary of State Ruth Johnson
- Phillip Knight, PhD, executive director, Food Bank Council of Michigan
- Carolyn Bloodworth, director of corporate giving, Consumers Energy
- Joseph Garcia, executive director, Cristo Rey Community Center
McKeague shared that the MHA’s 21 years of involvement with the MHG is directly related to the MHA’s mission to advance the health of individuals and communities. Food insecurity can have long-term negative effects on the physical and emotional health of adults and children. By seeking to eradicate hunger in Michigan, the MHA and its member hospitals are improving the health of individuals and their communities, both in and out of the traditional hospital setting.
MHA members are encouraged to conduct food and/or fund drives in their facilities during any two-week period before the campaign ends Nov. 30. Designation of a project team leader will greatly assist with communication among hospitals, the MHA and the FBCM. For more information on how to participate, contact Andrea Duguay at the MHA. Together, Michigan’s healthcare community can make great strides in the fight to end hunger.
