MAPS Prescriber Registration Verification Available

Posted on June 21, 2018

The MHA has been working with the state of Michigan, at the request of member hospitals, to develop a way to verify whether physicians have registered with the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS). Public Act 248 of 2017, which took effect June 1, requires a licensed prescriber to register with MAPS before dispensing or prescribing a controlled substance. The state has developed a mechanism that provides verification of prescribers’ MAPS registration and has asked the MHA to assist in the process.

To avoid being inundated with requests, the state has asked the MHA to collect contact information for one point person per health system, who will serve as the sole point of contact as state officials work through the verification process. The MHA will compile all member contacts in a master list and share it with state officials. Members are encouraged to send their health system’s contact information (name, email and phone number) to Janice Jones at the MHA as soon as possible.

Each system’s point person will be responsible for submitting a list of prescribers that their health system would like to have verified. The state has issued a specific template that includes all the information the state will need to cross-check a health system’s prescribers with MAPS. Only these templates should be sent to the state; they should not be converted to any other format.

The state is releasing additional resources to help healthcare providers. It has released an updated version of frequently asked questions to provide clarification on Michigan’s opioid laws and is hosting a Facebook live video stream with Michigan’s Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Deputy Director Kim Gaedeke. The stream will be available publicly 9 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 28, on LARA’s Facebook page and an archive will be available for replay for those who can’t attend while it airs.

Members with questions should contact Paige Fults at the MHA.
